We had the Ghana Consul-General, Geroge A.Piprah join our class to give a presentation about his organization, Foundation for African Children Education (F.A.C.E). The mission of F.A.C.E is to work to break the cycle of poverty through primary education. They want to help children in Ghana to go to school. They fundraise and collect donations for children to gain an education. Their main focus is on primary school children in the rural areas of Africa.

Every year F.A.C.E goes to Ghana with their volunteers to help the children. The money that is donated they buy backpacks, uniforms, school supplies, and books for the children so they have all the materials needed for an education. They money also goes towards providing lunches for the children. Each volunteer must pay there own way because they want to make sure all the money is used towards the children in need.

However, they cannot help every child. There is a criteria selection for sponsored children: the child must be attending primary school, they must live in a rural area of Africa, and the parents must be known in the community as being in need. Also, there is a criteria for on-going support of a child: the child must stay in school amid the monitoring committee in the village must verify this, the money must be used for the intended purposes, the child must continue to do well I school. Unfortunately, F.A.C.E isn’t able to aid all the children in an education but they still are making a difference by helping as many as they can.

Knowing that there is organization like this makes me happy because there are people out there willing to help internationally.

Under the Same Sun Presentation

This was my favorite and most touching presentation. The guest speakers left a big impact on me because I was not aware of albinism. I had heard of it before but I didn’t know it was such a big issue. The guest speakers were albino as well and this was the first time I had saw someone with albinism.
Under the same sun is a group people in surrey that help people in Africa that suffer from discrimination because they suffer from albinism. They help bring awareness and educations to people that do not what it is. It was very sickening and disturbing that people in Africa view albinos as “creatures” and do not consider them as human beings. Albinos are in danger because people believe their body parts are magical and can cure to stop black magic. Therefore, people cut certain body parts such as arms or legs and sell them for money.

It bothers and depresses me that innocent babies are at harm just because they are albino. Adults as well with albinism are victimized and hurt. This presentation left my well informed about albinism. I think this group is doing an amazing and powerful thing by creating awareness around the world about albinism. This presentation left a strong impact on me and I hope this group continues to educate others.

Chapter 4: The Sociology of Human Rights and Social Justice

Dialectic Reading Method

What questions did the text raise? How did the text answer this? How does the answer match my own ideas and experiences?
What are the obstacles of becoming human? In order to have their “fair” share of the societal pie, these individuals find detours, commit crime steal, for instance. The conflict theory blames “structures of domination” for preventing people from realizing their full potentials. Not every child goes down the right path because there are many obstacles in the way. Everyone does have the resources required to become a good citizen.
Define Human Rights? Human rights are universal moral rights that al people posses by virtue of being human, I believe that everyone human being has the right to food, water, clothing, shelter, and education.
Foundation of Human Rights? The human body and its basic needs form the foundation of human rights. Everyone deserves to be protected and have access to water and food in order to survive.
What is culture? The sum of “shared values. Symbol, practices, within a group of society” – provides basis for the development of human rights Culture adds diversity to the world

Social Construction

Chapter 2: Social Reality Construction and Global Social Justice

What questions did the text raise? How did the text answer this? How does the answer match my own ideas and experiences?
What is social constructionism? Based on the assumption that there is nothing natural or normal about the world we inhabit. Social reality is created by individuals to reflect certain interest in a world not necessarily of their making, Yes, different things mean different meanings to people in different societies. There is nothing good or bad. Something may be considered good in once society but bad in another. For example, polygyny.
What is critical constructionism? A theoretical framework based on the assumptions that the way social reality is constructed, perceived and presented usually reflects the interest of society’s elite more than house of the mainstream, and often at the expense of those with the least power in society, Today in society before something becomes acceptable it must first be legitimized by the power of the ruling elite.
What is hegemony? The process of control and domination by the ruling elite through consensus of the controlled dominated. Through hegemony on group exerts leadership over all others, and its interests are promoted above those of others. An example of this I experience would be a teacher and students.
What is global social justice? Ideas, norms, and practices designed to promote a fair, just, and inclusive global society, where people, irrespective of their national or territorial location, can have access to valued material resources, enjoy the values of environmentally clean and safe world. I find this pretty much the exact same as social justice but just an extension of it.

Social Justice

Chapter 1 – Key Concepts and Recurring Themes

Charles Quist-Adade

Affective Reading Method

After reading this chapter I have feel way more educated about social justice. There are so many terms that I did not know about. I always thought of social justice to be related to just racism. After reading this I learned about all other types of discrimination that I was not aware of like, classism, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, and sexism.  I knew everybody had there own opinions and there own viewpoint on thing but I didn’t know there was a specific term for this. Ideology constitutes peoples view of the world – how they see it and how they want the world to be. It is a set shared of ideas and beliefs which help individuals interpret events and which provides rationale for particular forms of actions. “An ideology is prescription for a way of life.” I like this definition for ideology because it is the perfect and easy way to define it and a good way to remember it. Also, there are different types of ideologies: Dominant, reformist, radical, and counter.

Invalidation Myths and Ideologies

Chapter 3 – Social Justice and the Social Construction of Inequality and Difference

Charles Quist-Adade

Paraphrastic Reading Method

Myths are social meanings and values that have gained traditional and historical acceptance. Invalidation myths are falsified statements about the human populations that make them inferior because of a particular human attribute. For example, blacks are classified as morally inferior human beings. They are known as criminals, drug dealers, wife-beaters, and murders. Jews are characterized as power hungry, money hungry, manipulators of media, governments and international finance, whose only loyalty is to other Jews.  Gays are depicted as sinful, perverted promiscuousness sex seekers, AIDS carriers and transmitters of other diseases. Invalidation myths of male superiority and female inferiority are in everyday attitudes and practices. Unequal treatment and culturally defined sex role differences have led to social construct of women being inferior. For instance, women are known to be the weaker sex, emotional, submissive, and are predisposed to adopt mothering roles. Men are known as dominant, stronger, aggressive decision makers, and the natural protectors of women and children. Invalidation ideologies are misleading theories which prove invalidation myths by assembling pseudo-scientific and pseudo religious evidence for them.  Invalidation theories are designed to give invalidation myths evidence and a reliable source to sharpen their effectiveness.

Chapter 2: Discrimination Faced by Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community

Joseph M. Pelleriot Jr.

Dialectic Reading Method

What questions did the text raise? How did the text answer this? How does the answer match my own ideas and experiences?
Can we unlearn gender? Messerschmidt has indicated that gender is a learned behavior that we can unlearn, however this is a difficult task for many of us, as we have been conditioned from birth until death I believe that gender can’t be unlearned. Male and females have learned to behave a certain way and perform gender roles that are acceptable to society.
What is masculinity of men and femininity of women? Women are expected to be emotional while men are expected to be more rational beings, I believe that children learn at such a young age that if you are a boy that are stronger and if you are a girl you are weaker.
Is sexuality a choice? Sexuality may also be a part of an identity continuum that could change or at the very least delineate from the simplistic idea that one is heterosexual or homosexual by choice or by birth. I think someone’s sexuality can change based on someone’s interactions and attractions. Someone can have same-sex attractions early in their life but not realize till later in their life.
What states in the US allow for same sex marriage? Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine and Iowa. I am totally against how there is a law against is same sex marriages. I think it shouldn’t matter if 2 people from the same sex want to get married and they have every right to get married just as a heterosexual couple does.
